Information notice

On 23 March 2011, French Prime Minister, François Fillon, asked ASN, under Article 8 of the Nuclear Security and Transparency Act, to conduct an additional safety audit at every nuclear facility in France, in light of current events at Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant.

In a letter dated 25 March 2011, ASN Chairman, André-Claude Lacoste, stated that it was “essential to learn from the accident at Fukushima”, in the same way as after the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents. He agreed to have an additional safety audit conducted at French nuclear facilities, focusing on risks relating to flooding, earthquakes, loss of power and loss of cooling water, as well as operational management of emergency situations.

ASN will ensure the consistency of action taken in France and Europe following the accident at Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant.

It will also give civil society and management and union representatives regular progress reports.
