ASN presents the French approach to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities to a delegation from the Japanese licensee, TEPCO

On 7th November 2014, Mr Masuda, TEPCO’s Head of decommissioning operations for reactors 1 to 4 of the Fukushima Daiichi NPP, met Philippe Jamet, ASN commissioner, and Fabien Schiltz, director of ASN’s Waste, Research Facilities and Fuel Cycle Facilities Department, in charge of decommissioning issues for the installations concerned in France. This meeting in the ASN headquarters was organised by the nuclear department of the French Embassy in Tokyo, following a visit to the facilities currently  undergoing decommissioning on the Marcoule (Gard département) and La Hague (Manche département) sites.

The discussions between Mr Masuda and ASN concerned the French regulations and approach to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, with the TEPCO representative in particular wishing to benefit from ASN’s experience with regard to worker protection and the safety of operations on complex dismantling worksites. Mr Masuda also gave a presentation to ASN of the decommissioning work being carried out on reactors 1 to 4 of the Fukushima Daïchi NPP.
