The general policies of ASN
The Transparency and Nuclear Security Act (TSN Act) confers upon ASN responsibilities in the areas of regulation, oversight, management of emergencies and public information. The importance of these duties and the diversity of the scope of its action mean that ASN must define the principles governing its work.
That is the purpose of ASN’s general policy statements, which set out the major aims of ASN in its areas of action: regulation, persuasion and sanctions, oversight, transparency, international relations, management of radiological emergencies, decommissioning and delicensing of basic nuclear installations in France.
The ASN position statements
As part of its responsibilities, ASN may adopt positions on specific topics, as was the case in 2009 and 2010 on the design of the EPR instrumentation and control system, the safety of radiotherapy treatments using narrow beams and the continued operation of the 900 MWe reactors.
ASN also adopts positions on topics of international scope, such as the safety of new nuclear reactor construction projects around the world.
These policies and position statements, supplemented by the work and opinions of ASN’s advisory committees on a number of technical topics, contribute to the definition of the ASN doctrine.
