The ASN position statements

tip a friend Print add to favorite Updated, June 10 2010

As part of its responsibilities, ASN may adopt positions on specific topics, as was the case in 2009 and 2010 on the design of the EPR instrumentation and control system, the safety of radiotherapy treatments using narrow beams and the continued operation of the 900 MWe reactors.

ASN also adopts positions on topics of international scope, such as the safety of new nuclear reactor construction projects around the world.

These policies and position statements, supplemented by the work and opinions of ASN’s advisory committees on a number of technical topics, contribute to the definition of the ASN doctrine.

Statement of ASN Commission: "Which level of safety for new nuclear reactors built around the world? "

One of the major ASN concerns is to achieve harmonization based on the best nuclear safety and radiation protection levels worldwide. We do not want a “two-speed” safety and we continue to promote at European and international levels safety objectives that take into account the lessons learnt from Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and September 11, 2001 events. In the event of proposals to export nuclear reactors which do not meet these safety objectives, ASN will not hesitate to declare that such reactors could not be built in France.

In a letter from its Chairman, André-Claude Lacoste, dated 1st July (available on the ASN website, www.asn.fr), the ASN informed EDF that it had not identified any generic problem that might cause it to doubt EDF’s capacity to assure the safety of their 900-MW reactors up to the age of forty years.

Extension of the operating lifetime of 900-MWe nuclear reactors up to 40 years: ASN considers that the conclusions of the generic studies conducted by EDF are satisfactory

On 1 July 2009, the French Nuclear Safety Authority (Autorité de sûreté nucléaire – ASN), in a letter from its Chairman, Mr André-Claude Lacoste, informed Electricité de France (EDF), the French electrical utility that ASN had not identified any generic problems capable of jeopardising EDF’s capability to ensure the safety of its 900-MWe reactors up to 40 years.
